Description / 1836 $1 Original - Medal Alignment Liberty Seated Dollar - Type 1 Flying Eagle Reverse With Stars PCGS XF45
Original, Medal Alignment, Die Alignment IV, with the eagle flying horizontally. This is one of the nicest examples of this issue we have seen in a very long time. Too bad not all coins, much less Gobrecht dollars, didn't have the surface quality and eye appeal of this spectacular coin! Boldly defined design elements are surrounded by clean fields, which are devoid of marks and scratches. Even, pearl gray toning with golden accents and luster peeking through add to the overall aesthetics of the coin. Just 1,000 plain edged specimens were struck. The feeder mechanism that was used, was apparently made for half dollar denominations or smaller, and thus the reverse die's rim became damaged. In an effort to correct the problem, the dies were rotated at various points during the striking process, but that only exaserbated the rim damage to both dies.
