1837 No Stars - Seated Liberty Half Dime H10C NGC XF45
No Stars. Small Date. Sharp strike. Toned in pearl gray and golden hues. Problem-free and attractive. Popular first year type coin.
Starting in 1838, the design of the Liberty Seated coins transitioned to the "No Stars Obverse." In this variation, the stars surrounding Liberty were removed from the design. Instead, the obverse displayed Liberty seated on a rock, with the shield and liberty cap still present.
The removal of the stars from the obverse design was mainly done to address the issue of wear and weak strikes. The presence of numerous stars around the central design created challenges in achieving a strong strike and maintaining the intricate details on the smaller denominations. By removing the stars, the Mint aimed to improve the overall quality and durability of the coinage.
