1893-S $1 Morgan Dollar PCGS VF30 (CAC)
Wow, FABULOUS for the grade with a bold strike, traces of luster in protected areas and ORIGINAL surfaces toned in soft gray with pastel iridescent overtones.
Produced at the San Francisco Mint, it has a relatively low mintage figure of 100,000 coins. Compared to other Morgan dollar issues, this mintage is notably lower, making the 1893-S Morgan dollar scarcer from the outset.
During the early 20th century, many silver coins, including Morgan dollars, were melted down due to the Pittman Act of 1918, which authorized the melting and recoinage of silver coins to replenish the nation's silver reserves. This melting activity further diminished the number of surviving 1893-S Morgan dollars. Finding well-preserved, uncleaned and non-damaged examples is challenging, as a significant proportion of the original mintage entered circulation and experienced substantial wear and mishandling.
